Get one safe photograph before you experiment. It costs nothing and it means you leave with something.
When something is happening, take the obvious, safe, correctly-exposed frame before you start trying anything.
It costs one press. Then experiment freely — slow the shutter, open the aperture, move — knowing that if none of it works you still have the photograph.
The habit matters most exactly when the moment will not repeat.
